The UK’s Largest Benin Bronzes Repatriation Oxford and Cambridge Will Return 213 Stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

As of 2021, seven Benin Bronzes have been returned to Nigeria by museums in Europe and North America.

On Friday, 29 July 2022, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in England announced that they would return 213 stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria. The University of Cambridge said it will return to Nigeria 116 artefacts currently held in the University’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, while the University of Oxford will return 97 Benin Bronzes to Nigeria in its Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean Museum.
