The ‘Son of a Nobody’ That Became President William Ruto Wins Kenya’s 2022 Presidential Election

Recent presidential elections in Kenya have generated controversy, and these elections were not different.

Two weeks ago, on 14 August 2022, Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), announced that William Ruto, of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), had received the most votes in the presidential election held on 09 August. Ruto, the incumbent deputy president, polled 7.17 million votes (50.49 per cent) to beat perennial presidential candidate and former prime minister, Raila Odinga, who received 6.94 million votes (48.85 per cent).
