About The Republic

The Republic is a Nigerian publication committed to rigorous, reflective and forward-looking journalism about Nigeria and wider African diaspora. We publish deeply reported stories and analysis on politics, business, culture, international affairs, and the ideas shaping Nigeria and the African diaspora.

Our work prioritizes depth over speed, context over noise, and clarity over spectacle.

THE ROLE

Sub-Editors play a critical role in maintaining The Republic’s editorial standards and expanding its intellectual and geographic reach.

Each Sub-Editor will manage a dedicated desk, working closely with reporters, writers, subject-matter experts, and senior editors. The role involves commissioning and shaping stories, editing accepted work, and ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence from pitch to publication. Stories will range from longform investigative pieces to compelling deep dives into Nigerian/Africa-focused debates.

This role is fully remote and part-time; ideal for an editor with a strong editorial eye, an active network of contributors, and a commitment to thoughtful, high-quality journalism.

Sub-Editors are expected to successfully commission two stories per month and are paid $150 per such story published. Where sub-editors write stories, they will receive The Republic’s standard payment rate of $200 per accepted piece. Note: the core function of sub-editors is to commission stories in order to diversify/enrich our storytelling, and self-written stories will not count towards the expectation of two commissioned stories.
