On Meeting Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o #OnSite⚡️ On Meeting Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o #OnSite⚡️

Sarah Ladipo Manyika reflects on her relationship with the late Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, the Kenyan writer, who passed away in May 2025. As a writer herself, she traces how her understanding of his life and work evolved over the years.

Her reflection carries literary and personal weight, drawing from encounters with Ngũgĩ beginning in 1999 at Cambridge University to later collaborations, meetings, telephone conversations, and email exchanges.

Manyika writes of how Ngũgĩ’s ideas, his generous support for writers, and his advocacy for indigenous African language influenced her own views on language and storytelling.

She explores Ngũgĩ’s role as a public figure, a ‘language warrior,’ and a master storyteller, while also acknowledging the complexity of his legacy in light of recent allegations made against him.
