While the global maternal mortality rate has declined by a remarkable 44 per cent since 1990, 99 per cent of all maternal deaths occur in economically developing countries, with Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia accounting for 88 per cent of maternal deaths globally. Sub-Saharan Africa still records the highest maternal mortality rate at 201,000 maternal deaths per year
