The Social Life of Tea Money in Kenya

If Kenya is the world’s leading exporter of black tea, how come the 834,000 smallholder farmers growing tea across Kenya’s highland counties still cannot meet the country’s poverty threshold? This is the story of what happens to tea money after the digital scale beeps.

The late-afternoon sun cuts low across the undulating green hills of Nandi County, casting long shadows over the iron-roofed leaf collection centre, and the air smells of freshly bruised tea leaves. Farmers stand in an orderly queue, their bodies leaning against heavy, woven plastic sacks packed tight with the day’s harvest. At the front of the line, a sudden, metallic beep cuts through the low murmur of conversation. Joyce Mutai, a mother of four, watches closely as her tea sack is hooked onto the digital hanging scale, the exact weight flashes up, and the centre supervisor quickly logs it into a handheld device linked right to her account.

Joyce doesn’t write the number down; she knows it will arrive later as an SMS; alongside hundreds of similar messages she has accumulated over the years. For decades, these rooms used manual dial scales that were famous for weight fraud, as a quick flick of a clerk’s wrist could easily steal kilograms from a full day of hard labour. Digital scales were officially introduced in Kenya’s smallholder tea sector in December 2020 to reduce disputes over weighing and restore confidence in the buying centres. By the time the monthly payment reaches her account, part of it belongs to the women and men who plucked the leaves, another part is automatically deducted by the factory that supplied fertilizer on credit, and another part to the village shop where maize flour, sugar and cooking oil have been bought on promise rather than cash.

Although the fertilizer that feeds the tea bush is partly government-funded and the weighing scale is digital, neither guarantees that the money reaching Joyce’s account will be enough to live on. The number on the screen is where the accounting begins. That number will flash from Nandi to the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) headquarters in Nairobi long before Joyce arrives home. Within days, the leaves will be processed into black tea; within weeks, they will be sold at the Mombasa Tea Auction, the world’s largest black tea marketplace. Months later, that same tea may be poured into mugs in London, Dubai or Washington.

Kenya remains the world’s leading exporter of black tea by volume, shipping a record 652,800 tonnes in 2025 and earning roughly $1.4 billion in foreign exchange. Within a $135.9 billion nominal economy, these earnings account for approximately 1.2 percent of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Beyond its direct share of national output, the sector serves as a cornerstone of the broader economy, generating 16.3 percent of the nation’s total commodity export earnings and underpinning the livelihoods of over seven million people, nearly 13 per cent of the population, who depend on the value chain.

The journey from Nandi to international markets is one of Kenya’s oldest export stories, but the wealth it generates has never made the journey home. That paradox has precise arithmetic. Dr Seronei Chelulei Cheison, a biotechnologist, certified operations manager, tea farmer and the founder of Sinonin Tea, publishes his farm’s full profit-and-loss accounts. They show that independent farmers supplying private factories in Nandi earn between KSh 19 and KSh 23 ($0.15 to $0.18) per kilogram in 2025, locked out of the annual bonus enjoyed by KTDA cooperative farmers. Adjusted against the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics’ basic-needs poverty line of KSh 5,995 ($46.30) per month, a one-acre smallholder operating at these flat rates brings home roughly KSh 3,142 ($24.26) per month.

A country celebrated as a global tea powerhouse depends on more than 834,000 smallholders who cannot, on those earnings, meet their own country’s poverty threshold. The digital scale weighs every kilogram with remarkable precision. Nonetheless, it cannot explain why the people growing one of Kenya’s most valuable exports remain below the country’s own poverty line.

WHAT THE SCALE SEES

By the time Joyce’s sack reaches the digital scale at Chebut Tea Factory’s collection network, much of its value has already been spoken for. Last season, her seven-acre farm produced 27,450 kilograms of green leaf. On average, she supplied around 2,280 kilograms a month, though prolonged dry spells early in the year cut deeply into her deliveries. When Chebut announced a second payment of KSh 17 ($0.13) per kilogram, her annual bonus amounted to KSh 466,650 ($3,604.47) before deductions. On paper, it looks like prosperity...
